What seals a Pelican case

Shown on a Protector 1650. Air and Storm cases have an O-ring seal and pressure valve too, with Press & Pull latches in place of double-throw.

  1. O-ring sealA tongue-and-groove lid presses onto a polymer O-ring. This is what makes it watertight.
  2. Double-throw latchesA second pry-bar movement starts the release, so a light pull opens them.
  3. Pressure valveLets air out after a flight or a climb so the lid still opens, and keeps water out.
  4. Padlock protectorsStainless steel reinforcement around the padlock holes.
  5. Fold-down handlesDouble-layer soft-grip handles that sit flat when not in use.
  6. WheelsPolyurethane tyres on stainless steel ball bearings. Wheeled models only.
  7. Trolley handleRetractable extension handle. Wheeled models only.

Before you buy

Protector or Air?

Both are IP67 with a lifetime warranty. Air is up to 40% lighter and costs a little less. Protector scores higher on protection in Pelican's own ratings, comes in more sizes, and handles a wider temperature range: −40°C to 88°C against Air's −18°C to 60°C.

Protector or Storm?

Same IP67 seal and lifetime warranty. Storm costs more for its hardware: Press & Pull latches you can open one-handed, the Vortex pressure valve, and MIL-STD-810H drop testing at extreme temperatures.

Are Pelican cases waterproof?

Protector, Air, Storm and Micro are IP67, certified by a third party: dustproof, and watertight 1 m under water for 30 minutes, when closed on an undamaged O-ring. Vault is IP54: dust-protected and splash resistant from any direction, but not for going under water. Cargo cases are weather resistant and dustproof.

Which Pelican cases are carry-on size?

The Protector 1510, Air 1535 and Storm iM2500 are built to common carry-on sizes, and ATX comes as the HC22 carry-on. Airline limits vary, so check yours before you fly. Carry-on cases

Which cases fit a rifle, bow or tripod?

Long cases come in Protector (1700 to 1780), Air (1705, 1745, 1755 and the 1745 Bow), Storm (iM3100 to iM3410) and Vault (V700 to V800). Protector and Storm long cases come empty or with solid foam, not Pick N Pluck. Gun cases

What holds a phone, keys or memory cards?

Micro cases run from the pocket-size 1010 through the 1015, 1020 and 1030 to the M40, M50 and M60. The memory card cases hold SD, CF or CFexpress cards. Micro cases

What about tools and first aid kits?

The 0450 Mobile Tool Chest rolls on wheels, with 4 shallow and 2 deep drawers, or 6 shallow and 1 deep. EMS cases come with trays set up for first aid kits. Tool chests EMS cases

What does the warranty cover?

Pelican guarantees Protector, Air, Storm and Micro cases for life against breakage and defects in workmanship. Vault has a 3-year limited warranty, Aegis bags 5 years, and ATX luggage lifetime. Cargo cases are covered for life too, and their mounts for 3 years. The warranty covers the case, not what's inside it or the foam.
