An intrinsically safe torch limits the electrical and heat energy inside it, so it cannot ignite flammable gas, vapour or dust. It is the light to carry in mines, refineries, fuel terminals, grain handling and confined spaces, and for fire crews entering unknown atmospheres.
Ratings to check
IECEx is the international certification scheme. Australia’s hazardous area standards (AS/NZS 60079) are based on the same IEC standards, so IECEx is the certification to look for here. “ia” is the highest protection level for intrinsic safety.
Class and Division is the North American system. Class I covers gases and vapours, Class II combustible dust and Class III fibres. Division 1 means the hazard can be present during normal operation. Division 2 means it is only expected when something goes wrong.
ATEX is the European scheme. The Pelican 9415i carries ATEX Zone 0 as well as IECEx ia.
Most lights in this range are rated IECEx ia and Class I Division 1. A few carry the North American rating only, and the 2460 StealthLite is rated Division 2. The exact rating is on each listing. Check it against your site’s hazardous area classification, including gas group and temperature class, before you buy.
